ME YOU ME YOU
ME YOU ME YOU (2020) is a series of short shorts created by Melissa Mabesoone and broadcasted online. We follow ME (played by Melissa) as she encounters various non-human counterparts from and around the neighbourhood. With humour, the videos reflect on the daily dramas that life contains.
The videos derived from exploratory walks in the district where Melissa used to live. During these walks she found a renewed appreciation for the neighborhood, its streets and houses, and the way people populate their gardens and windowsills.
During the Corona crisis, people placed bears behind windows to entertain children during their daily, often repetitive, walks in the neighbourhood. They were part of “Berenjacht” (Bear Hunt), an initiative in which children can spot bears in the streets of Flanders and beyond, to stay fit and enthusiastic during lockdown and to feel a sense of connection. The bears flirted with fiction, like sex workers behind glass, shouting possible storylines from their windows.
The new neighbours and the inviting statues in the front gardens seemed open to conversation. Melissa went for it. As the coronavirus measures slowly eased, the bears began to disappear one by one and were replaced by other knick-knacks and memorabilia.
From Eggsibitions to band rehearsals, these situations try to find a sense of connection, sometimes desperately, creating more conversations than expected, with garden owners and passers-by.
